Weekend Warriors: Avoid Injury During Summer Activities

08.2006
Sunny weekends mean softball and soccer leagues, rollerblading and volleyball in the park, a round of golf or a brisk swim at the beach. Preparation for summer activities can help prevent injury, like sprains, strains and pulled muscles.
“People want to go 100 miles an hour, and things like proper nutrition, attire and stretching get overlooked.”
  •  tips for preparing yourself and avoiding injury:
  • Stretch out and take your time!
  • Make sure you are well hydrated. Bring plenty of water to stave off dehydration throughout the day.
  • Don't play on an empty stomach. Eat a piece of fruit or an energy bar before you begin.
  • Invest in the proper attire, including appropriate footwear, padding, helmets, etc.
  • Prepare for the weather. For hot weather, wear breathable, loose-fitting clothing. Don't forget to bring a jacket for colder climates or evening activities.
  • Cool down. Stretching out again will prevent tight or sore muscles.
  • Ibuprofen and ice are your friends - don't be afraid to use them!
